The MT-121 module and DataPortal in LNG regasification systems, or how telemetry increases safety and reduces costs

LNG regasification stations – both stationary and mobile – are facilities that require supervision, stable communication and rapid response to any process deviationsLNG–Silesia, a Katowice-based company implementing projects in this sector, has been searching for years for solutions that would allow it to increase safety, improve efficiency and reduce station operating costs at a relatively low financial cost. To this end, the INVENTIA telemetry architecture was used, with the MT-121 telemetry module as its integrating element. It operates in a private, closed APN telemetria.pl and has been integrated with the visualisation platform DataPortal using M2M standard telemetry SIM cards. In practice, the solution has proven to be not only an alternative to classic PLC controllers, but also a standard that allows for faster start-up and more convenient management of LNG installations.

MT-121 as a centre, telemetry concentrator – control and communication in one device

In LNG-Silesia projects, the MT-121 module plays a dual role: process data recorder and local controller responsible for the station’s operating logicThe device is based on the CODESYS® runtime system, which is particularly important in applications requiring stability and standardization. CODESYS®  is one of the most recognizable ecosystems in industrial automation, allowing integrators to create control logic based on familiar tools, while the entire system gains transparency and the possibility of further expansion.

The MT-121-based system records and analyses relevant parameters of the LNG regasification process using signals from devices manufactured by reputable manufacturers. The level and pressure in the LNG tank are monitored mainly by SAMSON MEDIA 6SAMSON MEDIA 7 and Rosemount  3051 transducers/level indicators, which ensure high accuracy of indirect measurements of the LNG level in the tank.

The temperatures of the medium behind the atmospheric evaporators and behind the gas heating system are read from sensors manufactured by WIKA IS-3Aplisens PC-28Yokogawa EJA530ERosemount 3051 and Aplisens CT-GN1ensuring that the system remains fully compatible with commonly used industry standards.

The pressure before gas reduction is monitored using the same families of transducers (WIKA, Aplisens, Yokogawa, Rosemount), which facilitates standardisation and maintenance.

The reading of parameters from gas converters, such as temperature, flow and pressure downstream of the reduction system, is carried out via Modbus TCP/IP, with full cooperation with PLUM MacBAT IVPLUM MacBAT V and COMMON CMK-03 devices. This allows for accurate gas consumption recording and reporting in accordance with industry requirements.

Data from devices operating in the EX zone is sent to the system via intrinsically safe barriers. Communication with process equipment takes place via Modbus gateways, which ensures the integration of a wide range of field devices.

Local control logic based on CODESYS®

The MT-121 also implements local control logic, developed in the CODESYS® environment, covering the most important operational functions of the LNG infrastructure. One of these is the automatic switching of atmospheric evaporators, performed by controlling pneumatic heads TruTorq , working in conjunction with solenoid valves for the ATEX zone from Bürkert , which ensures reliable and maintenance-free switching of the evaporation modules.

The device also monitors the process of maintaining a positive gas temperature at the outlet of the installation (in-house production system), ensuring that the required parameters are maintained in all weather conditions.

The MT-121 also supports the ESD system, which enables quick and safe shutdown of the installation in the event of undesirable events, and works with the GAZEX hydrocarbon detection system, which is responsible for continuous monitoring of leaks and gas hazards in the installation area.

The use of CODESYS® gives integrators considerable freedom in creating control algorithms. Even an intermediate user can make corrections, update the logic or extend it with additional functions. This makes the project flexible and does not require extensive programming resources, and, importantly, it is a free environment that is easily available for download.

Secure communication thanks to the closed APN telemetria.pl

Telemetry in the gas sector places high demands on transmission security. For this reason, all MT-121 devices operate in a closed APN telemetria.pl infrastructure, which effectively isolates communication from the public internet

This solution ensures:

  • full control over network traffic,
  • high transmission reliability,
  • no need for VPN on the client side,
  • stable access even in locations with poor coverage.

For mobile LNG stations, which often operate in variable terrain conditions, this is an element that maintains continuity of monitoring.

Remote management – fast response and lower service costs

In many facilities, especially mobile LNG stations, physical access to equipment can be limited. The MT-121 eliminates this problem. With the ability to remotely change configurations, update parameters, perform restarts or send SMS commands from an authorised number, service technicians can respond instantly to deviations or failures.

In practice, this means fewer costly service calls and significantly shorter response times.

Compliance with Directive 2012/27/EU – consumption monitoring without additional recorders

The Energy Efficiency Directive requires companies to monitor gas consumption and report data. In LNG Silesia installations, this function is performed by the INVENTIA telemetry system, which records gas flow without the need for external recorders.

The data is sent to the DataPortal platform, where it can be automatically analysed, reported and made available to the relevant departments. As a result, the company not only meets the formal requirements, but also gains constant insight into the energy efficiency of its installations.

DataPortal – visualisation, analysis, quick diagnostics

Data transparency is extremely important for operators and engineers. The DataPortal.online platform allows you to create clear visualisations of station operation, historical graphs, present balances, and configure screens containing key safety parameters.

As a result:

  • the operator can see the current status of the equipment,
  • service technicians can diagnose the source of the problem more quickly,
  • management can observe trends, balances, and energy efficiency.

The environment also guarantees easy data sharing between departments or end customers.

Business benefits – more than just telemetry

The implementation of the INVENTIA architecture has brought LNG-Silesia a number of measurable benefits:

  • lower investment costs, as the MT-121 combines the functions of a PLC and a recorder,
  • higher security, reliable, secure data transmission and alarm functions that immediately notify of threats at the facility
  • easier servicing thanks to remote operation,
  • better control over gas consumption thanks to integration with DataPortal ,
  • scalability and standardisation resulting from the system being based on CODESYS®
  • full process history, enabling trend analysis and optimisation of plant operation.

The MT-121 module, in combination with APN telemetria.pl and the DataPortal platform, is an important element of LNG-Silesia’s LNG regasification station monitoring systems. The solution combines security, flexibility and ease of control logic development, while providing operators with constant access to data and the ability to respond quickly.

In the gas sector, where reliability, predictabilyty and compliance with requirements are key, INVENTIA’s arcgitecture has proven its competitiveness compared to PLC controllers offering not only enorumous possibilities, but above all stability and savings.
