In 2023, a modern telemetry system was implemented in the municipality of Oleśnica (Sztaszów County) to monitor water losses in the water supply network. The project was carried out in cooperation with BMsonic from Łomianki and is based on MT-718 battery-powered recorders, SIM cards assigned to the private APN telemetria.pl network and the DataPortal platform. This solution enables quick detection of hidden leaks and significantly speeds up the location of failures.

From the moment a leak occurs to its detection on the surface, an average of about 100 days pass. During this time, water irretrievably escapes from the network, generating financial losses. To prevent this, Oleśnica has implemented network zoning, i.e. measuring the flow and pressure in individual branches of the water supply system.
Night-time measurements are particularly important, when water consumption is minimal. Observing an increase in flow with a simultaneous drop in pressure in a given zone allows leaks to be detected quickly. In such situations, a service team equipped with acoustic correlators can narrow down the area of the leak search to a specific zone, which significantly reduces the time and cost of locating the failure.
The result of implementing the system is the ability to detect leaks long before water appears on the surface, reducing operating costs and generating savings that exceed the cost of the implementation itself.
The basis of the system in the Oleśnica municipality is the MT-718 battery-powered recorders with M12 connectors and IP68 protection. The telemetry modules communicate via the RS-485 (Modbus RTU) interface with the ABB AquaMaster IV flow meter and the Keller 33X pressure transducer, which additionally provides temperature measurement.
The system also includes sensors that signal well flooding and manhole opening. The flow meter reads parameters such as empty pipe signalling, low battery status, reverse flow, forward, reverse and net flow meters, as well as current flow rate.
All data is sent to the DataPortal platform, where it is visualised and analysed every hour, providing operators with real-time control over the network.

Operators use an intuitive interface in which the start screen displays a network map with the locations of objects marked with animated markers. A standard marker indicates that the facility is operating correctly, while an alarm marker indicates an event requiring intervention. This allows the operator to immediately see where the problem has occurred in the network without having to search through tables and reports.
Below the map is a list of alarms, which provides a quick overview of all events in the system and facilitates the prioritisation of actions. By clicking on a given marker, the user is taken to a detailed view of the object, where flow and pressure trends, flow meter alarm statuses and the statuses of additional sensors, such as flooding or manhole opening, are available. This solution allows for both a quick overview of the situation throughout the system and a detailed analysis of the parameters at a selected measuring point.
The implementation of the system in the municipality of Oleśnica, carried out in cooperation with BMsonic from Łomianki, shows how telemetry can support effective water supply network management. The combination of MT-718 recorders, SIM cards and the DataPortal platform enables faster detection and location of leaks, reduction of water losses, optimisation of technical services and measurable financial savings. It is also worth noting that the system is fully energy-efficient. Thanks to the use of battery-powered loggers, it does not require mains power, and the batteries only need to be replaced once every few years. This makes the solution not only effective but also very practical to maintain. The implementation of MT-718 telemetry modules increases network reliability, raises operator awareness and provides tools for proactive infrastructure management.
